“Green Light, Buckeye State! A Guide to Buying Recreational Weed in Ohio
Welcome fellow Ohioans! The Buckeye State has finally joined the ranks of states legalizing recreational marijuana use. Here’s a friendly guide to help you navigate this exciting new landscape and understand the timeline for your next great green adventure.
1. The Green Light: On November 3, 2022, Ohio voters approved Issue 1, making the possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and growing up to six plants at home legal for adults aged 21 and over. However, sales of recreational weed won’t be happening just yet.
2. The Planning Stage: The Ohio Cannabis Control Commission (OCCC) has until September 8, 2023, to establish rules for the retail sale of adult-use cannabis. This includes setting up a licensing process, determining how many dispensaries can operate, and establishing safety protocols.
3. The License Race: Prospective business owners will have until December 8, 2023, to apply for a license from the OCCC. They’ll need to meet certain requirements, such as being at least 21 years old, passing a background check, and paying a non-refundable application fee of $5,000.
4. The Green Growth: Once licenses are issued, growers will have up to six months to cultivate their first harvest. This means you might see your first recreational weed on shelves by June 2024.
5. The Grand Opening: After the crops are grown and the dispensaries are ready, they’ll need to pass a final inspection from the OCCC before they can open their doors to the public. This could happen sometime in July or August of 2024.
6. The First Purchase: Once your favorite local dispensary is up and running, you’ll need to bring a government-issued ID proving you are at least 21 years old. You’ll also be able to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana per purchase and grow up to six plants at home.
Remember, even though recreational use is now legal in Ohio, it’s still illegal under federal law. Make sure to keep your weed out of sight when traveling across state lines, and always store it securely at home.
In the meantime, let’s celebrate this milestone for Ohio and look forward to the vibrant cannabis community that is sure to grow in the coming years. Stay informed, stay green, and as always, be responsible!
